Moonstone is the birthstone for June.
Moonstone is one of the birthstones for June. The iridescent quality of Moonstone, makes it a wonderful stone to wear. Moonstone is traditionally a white stone with blue ‘fire’. The clearer the stone and the stronger the fire, the more expensive the stone. Some white Moonstone, can contain no fire and be a lifeless stone.
I hand pick all my stones personally, for me, hunting out the Moonstone with blue fire is very important. Even in small pieces of Moonstone you can find pieces that have that hint of blue. I hope you can see in the earrings below that small pieces of moonstone, don’t have to be lifeless.
Tara Chandelier Earrings featuring Moonstone, set in silver with rose gold vermeil.
I was lucky enough to visit a Moonstone mine in Sri Lanka, there is something very satisfying about seeing where and how the stones I use in my jewellery are produced. Our guide at the mine was very patient and was happy to explain the varying grades of Rainbow Moonstone.
Moonstone, being a neutral coloured stone, works so well with other coloured gemstones. I enjoy picking out other stones that will work, the moonstone can feature as the main stone in a piece of jewellery. The Nikita earrings above look so pretty when the pink tourmalines are added to the Moonstone.
Moonstone with a blue stone is a natural combination. The ‘fire’ in rainbow moonstone is blue, so adding a blue stone such Iolite can work very well. Below a wonderful rainbow moonstone has been surrounded in small Iolite gemstones.
Moonstone in various colours
Moonstone is also available in other colours. Peach and grey are two of the other colours. Peach moonstone with rose quartz feature in the Jasmine Chandelier earrings.
